Our advice to new Scottie owners
As a proud owner of a Scottish Terrier puppy please remember that since it was born, he/she has had the rest of the litter and it’s mum to interact with. We have pulled it away from its comfort zone to join your family now.
Regardless of what you intend to do with the puppy - if for showing, a pet or companion we as their human “grand-parents” we expect you to enter an unbreakable contract with your puppy and follow the below ten commandments.
If at any stage, you are not capable or unable to do so we will be willing to take your Scottie back and financially compensate you, because this puppy you are entrusted with is also part of our family.
A Pet's Owners Ten Commandments
-
My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you regardless of how short or long is likely to be painful.
-
Give me time to understand what you want of me. Don't get frustrated and impatient, remember I am a stubborn and proud Scot.
-
Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
-
Don't be angry with me for long and please don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends and family, your entertainment, but I only have you - my owner. You are my entire life.
-
Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand the tone of your voice when you speak to me.
-
Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
-
Never hit me or strike me, remember that I could hurt you too and yet I choose not to hurt you intentionally.
-
Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if there might be something bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, have I had enough water, or I might have been in the sun too long, I might just be getting older and weaker.
-
Please take care of me when I grow old – our contract is for life. You also will eventually grow old and need love, care, comfort and attention.
-
On the ultimate final journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't break the trust we have and make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so – I am your Scottie.
